How Battersea's dog tag engraver keeps owners within the law

Volunteers from a major animal charity have been helping ensure dog owners keep within the law, thanks to a donation from the Animal Rescue Foundation in December 2012.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home needed £6,384 to purchase a dog tag engraver, used by their volunteers at a range of community events where they provided an engraving service.

Attending such events helps the Home to raise awareness of responsible dog ownership, as well as promoting the legal identification requirements that come with owning a dog – which must wear a collar and tag engraved with the owner’s contact details.

Engraving also ensures that fewer owners risk a criminal record, and a maximum £5,000 fine, from not having their dog tagged, that fewer lost and homeless dogs arrive at Battersea – and that the owners of these dogs are easier to identify and contact.

Established in 1860, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home aims never to turn away a dog or cat in need of help, caring for them until their owners or loving new homes can be found, no matter how long it takes. Since it was founded, Battersea has rescued, reunited and re-homed over 3.1 million dogs and cats.
